About Me

Welcome to Chester Senior High! I am Mr. Chavan Nelson, a teacher of English II, III & IV in the English Department; College Credit Facilitator; S.W.A.G. Leadership Team Member. I am a Ph.D. candidate and I hold a Master's of Arts in English Language and a Bachelor's of Arts in Secondary English Language and Literature Education. I have been an educator for over 13 years. I have worked with and under Ministries or Departments of Education in Jamaica, Japan, Qatar, Grenada, and the USA. Additionally, I actively participate in community development and welfare. I am a 2018 recipient of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Most Honorable Andrew Holness' Nation Builder Award; an ambassador for the Governor-General of Jamaica, His Excellency, Sir Patrick Allen's "I Believe Initiative"; chairman of an NPO, that does work in Jamaica and Kenya, Africa.

"English Language pedagogy is not set in stone; the nature of teaching is itself dynamic. It changes the more I develop as a teacher, shaped by my own experiences in my teaching and learning or dictated by the learners I am expected to teach. I have come to realize that a more eclectic orientation is best for teaching English as a second language. For English as a foreign language, it's central to learners' success, to focus on fluency and accuracy. English instructions, coupled with emerging technologies, must be practical, relevant, and student-centered in order to promote active discovery, and critical learning in all four language learning skills." - csn
