Pre-K Curriculum

At Lewisville Elementary School, we use the Frogstreet curriculum in our pre-k classrooms. The Frogstreet curriculum integrates language/literacy, math, science and social studies content. We also use Letterland to teach letters and letter sounds (phonics). The curriculum has 9 learning units that are approximately 4 weeks in length.

Letterland is our wonderful phonics program and after a few weeks of starting school, your child will come home excited about traveling to Letterland everyday to meet different letter characters. Each letter is a person, animal or object (Annie Apple, Bouncy Ben, Clever Cat, etc.).

Along with teaching academic content, one of our main goals in Pre-K is to teach social/emotional skills, self help skills and health concepts. This includes following rules/directions, getting along with classmates, resolving conflicts appropriately with and without the help of teachers, using good manners, proper hand washing, buttoning/zipping clothing, table manners, cleaning up/putting materials away in the correct places and so much more!

Procedures and Expectations

Classroom Management Plan

Terry/Patterson – Pre-K

Philosophy

We believe all students are capable of learning and behaving appropriately in class and at school.  It is essential for the learning environment to be safe and conducive to learning.  Therefore, no student should prevent learning from occurring in the classroom.  Our expectations will be clearly and concisely communicated to students, leaving them no room to make assumptions about what is acceptable.  Students must be willing to accept appropriate consequences for their actions.  To protect the learning environment in my classroom, I have developed this classroom management plan.

Procedures

Procedures have been established to ensure that our classroom operates smoothly on a daily basis.  These procedures are designed to eliminate the loss of instructional time and provide a safe and orderly environment.  The procedures will be taught, modeled and reviewed throughout the school year.

Hallway

  • Students will walk in an orderly, single file line.

  • Students will walk on the right side of the hallway.

  • Students will walk in the 3rd square from the wall.

  • Students will walk silently in the hallway.

  • Students will keep hands and feet to self.

  • Students will raise their hands in case of an emergency.

Recess

  • Students will walk until after rounding the corner.

  • Students go down the slide, one at a time, on their bottoms.

  • Students will only climb up to slide using the ladders or steps.

  • Students stay away from the end of the slide while others are sliding down.

  • Students will not throw wood chips, sticks or rocks.

  • Students will not climb on the concrete wall or gates.

  • Students will stay away from classroom windows.

  • Students will respect personal space of others (no play fighting).

  • Students will go in one directions around the playground on tricycles and scooters.

  • Students will only be allowed to use the restroom in case of an emergency.

Cafeteria (Breakfast)

  • Students will walk when entering and leaving the cafeteria.

  • Students will stay seated while eating.

  • Students will talk quietly while in the cafeteria.

  • Students will use table manners.

  • Students will keep hands to themselves while in line and at the table.

Lunch (In the classroom)

  • Students will wash their hands and get their tray before sitting down at a table.

  • Students will stay seated while eating.

  • Students will talk quietly to classmates at their table.

  • Students will use table manners.

  • Students will keep hands to themselves at the table.

School/Classroom Arrival

Students can begin entering the building at 7:20. Students can go directly to breakfast in the cafeteria or go to the Pre-K/Kindergarten hallway. Breakfast is served until 7:45 each morning. Students that arrive at the classroom before 7:30 will sit quietly outside the classroom door.  When the 7:30 bell rings, students will enter the room quietly, unpack their folder, place it in the green tub, put up their book bag and trace/write their name. Once a student has completed those tasks, they can choose a center to play in. Students may use the bathroom, get water, etc. during this time.  If a student arrives after 8:00, the parent is required to sign in the student at the office to receive a tardy pass.

Restroom

During direct instruction, students need to ask permission to go to the restroom.  At other times in the classroom, students are allowed to go to the restroom anytime they need.  There are also several designated bathroom times throughout the day such as before lunch, before recess and during center time. Students will wash their hands quickly and quietly after using the bathroom.

Asking for Help from the Teacher

Students are encouraged to ask questions whenever needed.  Students should raise their hands quietly if they need assistance.

Group Time

During direct instruction, students are not allowed to talk.  They may raise their hands to ask and/or answer a question.

Centers

Independent work in centers is self-selected by students except in the case of teacher request or behavior issues. Students will participate quietly and politely until it is time to clean up the centers. It is the students’ responsibility to clean up each center.

Classroom Guest

Students are expected to remain on task and use their best school manners whenever a guest is present in the classroom.

Student Expectations

  1. I will follow directions.

  2. I will keep my hands and feet to myself.

  3. I will use a small voice inside and tall voice outside.

  4. I will work together and not fight with my classmates.

*These will be taught using the Dr. Jean song Rules of the Classroom.*

Prevention Techniques

  • Monitor the students closely at all times

  • Establish and adhere to classroom routines

  • Use effective instruction

  • Use creative methods to gain and keep the students’ attention

  • Make the most efficient use of time

  • Clearly communicate classroom expectations and review as needed

  • Maintain a clean, well-organized classroom where everything has a place

  • Display classroom rules

  • Positive behavior reinforcement plan

  • Always accommodate for my students’ individual needs, when possible

  • Set a positive classroom environment where children feel welcome, accepted and part of a community of learners

Positive Reinforcement Plan

  • Stickers

  • Smile and positive comments

  • Choosing something from the “Treasure Box”

  • Good note or phone call home

  • Special game at recess

  • Choosing a person to sit with at lunch

  • “Good” visit to administer

  • “Good” visit to another person/teacher

Classroom Reinforcement Plan and Behavior Log

In our classroom we have a “Make Better Choices” book. When students make good choices, follow classroom rules, help other classmates or the teachers, complete exceptional classwork, etc. the students will not have to sign the “Make Better Choices” book and they will get a green on their behavior log. If a student makes poor choices, they will have to sign their name in the “Make Better Choices” book. If they only have to sign the book once, they will get a yellow on their behavior log. If they have to sign the book two or more times, they will get a red on their behavior log. Students that receive a red will have a note about their behavior on the back of their behavior log. If behavior becomes a consistent issue, parents may be contacted by phone or asked to come in for a parent/teacher conference. The behavior color is recorded on the student’s behavior log daily so parents can monitor their child’s behavior. Parents are asked to initial the behavior log daily.

Positive Interventions

  • Attention getting signals

  • Proximity control

  • Re-directions

  • Message to signify another warning will not be given

  • Address it and drop it

  • Nonverbal and private verbal warnings

  • Behavior encouragement

Appropriate Consequences

  • Behavior log

  • Parent contact

  • Parent conference

  • Parent classroom visit

  • Abuse it and lose it

  • Time out

  • Sit beside teacher at lunch/Silent lunch

Referral to Office

  • Leaving/running from teacher/classroom (after warning)

  • Disruption that stops instruction

  • Bullying (guidance counselor)

  • Possession of weapon

  • Intentional physical abuse

  • Blatant disrespect to a teacher

I look forward to a successful school year with you and your child.  By working together, we will become a community of “life-long learners”.  Please do not hesitate to contact me at the school if you have any questions or concerns.
