Q1: Will Chester County School District offer Algebra I and English I to 8th grade students during the 2020-2021 school term?
A1: We have listened to your concerns and yes, Chester County School district will offer Algebra I and English I to all 8th grade students who have been identified as Gifted and Talented in the area(s) of math and/or English.
Q2: Will additional students be added to 8th grade Algebra I and/or English I courses during the 2020-2021 school term?
A2: During 2020-2021 school term, additional students MAY (no guarantee) be added to Algebra I and/or English I courses based upon students’ most recent MAP data. Teachers and administrators will review MAP data to identify those students who have scored at least a year above the national average in the areas of math and/or reading. MAP data, along with classroom performance, will be taken into consideration when considering additional students. MAP scores alone will not determine students’ eligibility into the course(s).
Q3: Will an opt-in option be available for students who have not been identified as Gifted and Talented in math and/or reading?
A3: Students will not be allowed to opt into 8th grade Algebra I or English I courses. The courses are being offered primarily to our 8th grade Gifted and Talented students to meet their unique learning needs.
Q4: Will there be additional opportunities for my child to qualify for placement into 8th grade Algebra I and/or English I?
A4: Teacher and administrator teams will review MAP and classroom data annually to determine those students who have performed exceptionally well in math and/or English. Based upon their findings, recommendations will be made for Gifted and Talented testing.
