Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Dolores Huerta. Dolores worked with Cesar Chavez to form the National Farm Workers Association. Throughout her career, she advocated for workers' rights, women's rights, and Latinx rights.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Sonia Sotomayor. Sonia was the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, appointed by President Obama. Prior to that, she was a D.A. for New York County, and a US District Court judge appointed by President George H.W. Bush.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Lin-Manuel Miranda. A Puerto-Rican American, he is a composer, actor, writer and activist, most famous for his Broadway hit Hamilton. Along with the Hispanic Federation, he raised millions to help with hurricane Maria relief in Puerto Rico.

Seventh grade Geography students wrapped up their first unit on maps and models of the earth by making 3-D globes out of papier mâché, painted them and added the continents.



8th grade students wrapped up their lesson on African and Gullah contributions to South Carolina culture by making Benne wafers, a cookie from West Africa. After mixing and baking the cookies, they shared them with classmates and teachers.





Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Ruben Salazar. A Mexican-American, he served in the Army, became a journalist for the Los Angeles times, and focused on the injustices in the Chicano community.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Cesar Chavez. Cesar was the son of farmworkers in Arizona, served in the US Navy, and later formed the National Farm Workers Association to fight for civil and workers' rights through peaceful resistance.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Octaviano Larrazola. A Mexican-American, Octaviano was the 4th governor of New Mexico, and later a US Senator, fighting for civil rights and equal treatment for Hispanic Americans.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Roberto Clemente. A Puerto Rican-American, he was an MLB player for the Pittsburgh Pirates with 3000 base hits. He is the first Hispanic player in the MLB Hall of Fame.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Ileana immigrated to the US from Cuba. She served in the Florida House of Representatives and Senate, the first Hispanic woman to serve in both. She was also the first Hispanic woman to ever serve in the US Congress.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Richard Cavazos. A Mexican-American from Texas, Richard was the first Hispanic person to become a 4-star general in the US Army. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Jose Andres. Born in Spain, immigrating to the United States in 1991, Jose became an award-winning chef, and formed the World Central Kitchen that provides hot meals to those affected by natural disasters.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Ellen Ochoa. Born in California, Ellen became the first Hispanic woman in space aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1993.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Guy Gabaldon. Guy was a foster child in a Japanese family where he learned Japanese. During WWII he peacefully captured more than 1500 Japanese soldiers in the South Pacific by negotiating with them in Japanese.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Meet Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Alexandria is the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress at age 29. She is from New York and of Puerto Rican descent.
